Tall Painting

- This video shows that making a great piece of art does not require a paintbrush, instead only paint is needed and it is allowed to flow and go in any direction
- Art is no longer defined by a canvas, paints and paintbrush (in fact in tall painting the canvas and paintbrush do not exist), people are exploring other means of making artwork
- Gravity plays a big part in this art technique, because it is gravity that is pulling the paint down, the artists are only pouring the paint and letting gravity do the rest of the work

Painting on Water: Turkish Marbling

- Paint usually flows in water, but in Turkish marbling the use of floating dyes or paint on water are used to create simple, yet beautiful pieces of art
- When the person is painting, it is mesmerizing to watch and it fills one with wonder; water is a part of every living organism and no species can survive without it, yet no human has thought of making water their canvas

- Often we are too busy admiring art by Da Vinci, Michelangelo etc. and we forget that there are artists in today's time that are trying to make their mark
- On this website it explores art by 5 Canadians (in which 4 out of the 5 artists are women), it has a mini interview with them and has links so one can see their artwork
- Woman have always been deprived of their rights and not allowed to explore; we have seen many artwork by men and now it is time that women also get the chance

Annotation:
- Art Attack is a show that used to come on television, every time I watched it, I would be inspired to create something and hope that the end result would be similar to his; usually near the end of the episode, he would create a picture using different, everyday, ordinary objects
- In this video he creates Queen Elizabeth using money, with his canvas as the floor and his medium as money
- Money is a big part of today's world (some say, money makes the world go round), and it shows that money has no value, humans are the ones that make money so valuable

White Paper Art

- Paper is used in many ways, and it has always been associated with art (for example, origami), however, this artist makes 3D art with paper; you can twist it and unravel it to make a new shape, and like he says in the video “it looks almost eerie”
- He makes art, but there are other forms within the shape, that are only revealed once someone unravels and twists it

TedTalk:Leah Buechley - How to “sketch” with electronics

Annotation:
- In today's world, people are very reliable on electronics, they are obsessed with new technology, so much so that when the latest phone comes out they feel they must have it; because of this thinking old phones are discarded, to be left forgotten and to poison the Earth (there are landfills filled only with chips that can not be reused, and the chips are filled with chemicals, these chemicals leach into the soil, then ground water and eventually into our delicate bodies)
- Leah and her team can reuse these chips and make something new; this is the latest form of art which no longer requires the usual canvas, paintbrush and paints
- It allows people to create and explore technology first hand; these days everything is bought and no one has any chance to make something themselves

Sand Art, BY Kseniya Simonva in Ukraine's Got Talent
Making art of any kind is a process and it requires dedication, commitment and sometimes a lot of patience. But, doing art with sand is more challenging because one must make pictures and drawings with their hands and sand. The way the sand falls, how much sand is swiped away, all determine the outcome of the picture. Drawing with sand is different than drawing with a pencil or painting with a brush. This is because, the hand guides the pencil or paint brush, however, with sand you can only guide your own hand and it requires a lot of control (with how much sand to release).
For a lot of people (myself included) the only art they have done with sand is building a sandcastle at the beach. So, something like this just blows my mind because, the only sand art that I have ever thought of is making sandcastles with sand. However, Simonva has taken sand out of the beach and brought it into her studio to experiment and work with. I feel that she is a true artist, who incorporates other things in her art and looks for other and new ways to create art. This goes beyond the art that most people are used to (art made with just paint and a brush) seeing and it makes them open their mind, expand their thinking and it also inspires people to think outside of the box or outside of the norm. In addition, she not only creates art for the sake of it and for winning the competition, but she gets absorbed with what she is making and she pours all of her feelings and emotions into art. I have observed this in the video, with the way she throws the sand across the light box with such anger that one can see that she becomes one with the art and she thinks of nothing else but her art. Furthermore, she not only creates sand art but she also tells a story through the sand, she makes the story come to life. To me, it seems as if I am watching a movie and the story is unfolding one scene at a time. It touches the heart and makes you reflect and think about the issue she is addressing.
This is not the first time I have seen this, I have seen something similar on India's Got Talent. However, the only difference was that there were three guys all working together. It was almost mesmerizing to watch the three of them; they all knew their roles so there was no mistake and the way they worked made them flawless. it was well practiced and not once did their hands collide with each other. Each time, they performed they addressed a new issue; the very first one I watched, they addressed the safety of women in India and the issue of rape. The way that they portrayed this, touched me deep within my soul. Just like Simonva, they also told a story while still addressing the issue.

Hina Aoyama's Super Intricate
Hand-Cut Paper Designs Paper is a daily part of our lives, from drawing, painting, reading the newspaper, and even cleaning up a mess. Paper is a medium that is used in our every-day lives, as well as art. There are not many mediums like paper that are so frequently used for a variety of activities. Aoyama says her passion is “to create a finest cutoff beyond the level of the very time-consuming needle lace making.” Paper is very common to use in art, however, how one uses it is a different story. Making delicate designs with paper is a long process, where one has to be careful, patient, and pay attention to detail; even the smallest mistake can ruin the hard work of the artist. Also, after they are done, they have to be careful of how they handle their artwork, looking at some of the pictures, there are many thin strips and if not handled properly they can rip and ruin the piece. Many artists have said that paper cutting provides them with a calm feeling, reduces stress while providing a sense of comfort and peace. She says, “I don't follow traditional, but I am trying to create a mixture of the traditional and modern styles and to produce my own world through this super fine, lacy-paper-cuttings technique.” Looking at the pictures, it amazes me, what one can create with paper. I don't know about you, but I feel inspired and in the future I want to try something like this. For further information on the author, you can check out her website, Hina Aoyama's official website |
Jennifer Maestre's Pencil Sculptures
Pencil has always been used to write and to draw with, however Jennifer Maestre challenges this, and creates sculptures with the pencil itself! When I first saw these sculptures, I thought they were inspired from sea creatures, because some of them look like the sea creatures that are found on the sea floor. Regardless of this, the sculptures are amazing and looking at them, it is easy to tell that making the sculptures is a long and difficult process.
"My sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. The spines of the urchin, so dangerous yet beautiful, serve as an explicit warning against contact. The alluring texture of the spines draws the touch in spite of the possible consequences. The tension unveiled, we feel push and pull, desire and repulsion. The sections of pencils present aspects of sharp and smooth for two very different textural and aesthetic experiences."
She makes the pencil either dull or sharp and this creates the effect we see in the pictures, however, it is not as easy as it sounds because next she has to decide where to put them and also where it would look better so that it gives the effect that she wants to give. When making anything, there are lots of possibilties and sometimes depending on which one you pick, the outcome can be either positive or negative. In this case, it propelled her forward and she used her emotions and feelings of the sea urchin to create her sculptures. Looking at the sculptures it is hard to tell what inspired to do this, but when she explains why she choose this particular method, it all makes sense and you can relate to her and agree with her.
"To make the pencil sculptures, I take hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together. The beading technique I rely on most is peyote stitch."
Jennifer not only creates sculptures using pencils but she also creates jewellery, using the same medium. It amazes me how using such an ordinary, every-day object she creates something that is extraordinary. It inspires you to create something like this and it also forces you think of every-day ordinary objects as not ordinary but something that has the power to create magnificent things.
"I'm inspired by animals, plants, other art, Ernst Haeckel, Odilon Redon, mythology. In fact, it isn't easy to specify particular sources of inspiration. Sometimes one sculpture will inspire the next, or maybe I'll make a mistake, and that will send me off in a new direction."

Etsy
This website gives artists the chance to sell their products without spending money on their own website, it also allows other people to buy products that are hand-made. In today's world everything is made cheap and easy, and everything is for sale. It is very hard to find products that are hand-made, vintage and provide a new sense of style. It is very hard to get someone's name out in the world. A lot of people in this world have such amazing talents, unfortunately they (and their talents) remain hidden from the world because they are unknown and no one knows them. This also creates the problem that since they are not well known their products will also have no references. This is not always the case, because now people have the chance to showcase their talents through technology (such as Etsy), not only this but it is also very easy and they can operate their business from home. In addition, I also like the fact that the products are not restricted to one country only, and people from all over the world can buy and sell products. This gives people the chance to connect with each other and also it could hold a possibility of more promotion and it could lead to something greater. |
Artists That Play with Light and Shadow
There has been poetry, music, references on shadows, but for the first time there has been art using shadows. When we see a shadow we do not think twice about it, because it is something that has always been there and people do not think twice about it. However, everyone has observed that shadows do not often portray the right image, in fact shadows make things seem something they are not. These artists have used this to their advantage and since they are aware of this, they made art that depends entirely on shadows. Without any shadows, their art does not make sense and it does not give the same effect as it would with the shadows. These artists have used various objects, played and experimented with the lighting, observed the shadows to make the brilliant and amazing pieces of art. Looking at the art, it shows how much planning and effort went to make these pieces actually work. It is not an easy task, the artists probably had to re-create the art many times to get the right effect and to perfect the piece the way they want to. In addition, in order to create something like this, the person needs to understand their lights, dark's and understand where the light is coming from and what effect it could create, and also where the light is hitting, reflecting etc. It is not as easy as it seems, because one has to take many things into consideration and it takes a lot more planning that it normally would for another piece of art. Creating something like this, requires a lot of patience, dedication and perseverance. This is because, if it does not create the image wanted, then one has to go back to planning and re-start everything again. They also have to take into consideration where the light hits, where it go and if there are objects, will they reflect the light or create a shadow? People are being left in awe by looking at this artwork. It is also being recognized and Newcastle Brown Ale has also taken a similar approach to advertise their product. However, they have used this technique on a broader scale, and have created a similar piece of art using a billboard, or on the side of a building for example. Company's want to use a new promotion technique that will make them stand out and they are turning to art to advertise their products in unique methods. The Creators Project
Over the last 20 years, the use of the internet and computers has increased significantly. It has increased to the point where in today's world people are more concerned about their phones than other people. I feel like technology is slowly draining humanity from us and making us more into robots than humans. For example, I heard of these parents who would take care of their online baby by feeding it and so on, however, because of this they neglected their REAL baby, who died. Despite this, we can not blame all of the human race for a few incidents because not everyone is like this. There is always too much of a good thing and often too much of a good thing can end up harming us. The same is with technology, we are progressing too fast and our mind is too slow to keep up. In the greed of progress what are we sacrificing? **Sorry went off topic*** Anyway, to back track, we have become more relying and dependent on technology than ever before. This is both a good thing and a bad thing (already explained above), Now people can connect like never before, and this creates more opportunities for talented people to be discovered and it gives them a chance to be what they truly wish to be. There are so many websites on the internet that allow people to showcase their talents, one such site is The Creators Project. This website gives artists the chance to portray their work and be recognized for it. "Founded by a revolutionary partnership between Intel and VICE, The Creators Project celebrates visionary artists across multiple disciplines who are using technology in innovative ways to push the boundaries of creative expression. We seek to inspire new and emerging artists by showcasing the infinite possibilities presented by the advancement of modern technology. The Creators Project is proud to have showcased more than 500 artists from all around the world." One of the first things that I discovered on this site, was the Simpsons Couch Gag. The couch gag is the title song of the show and at the end of the song all of the characters sit on the couch and proceed to watch the show. However, over the large period of time that this show has been running, the title song has been creatively displayed by different artists (such as Banksy, and Guillermo Del Torro). This keeps the viewer hooked and coming back for more. I always loved to see what the newest couch gag was when watching the show. I love the show and I loved watching the various couch gags. "The first Simpsons ‘couch gag’ was simple and straightforward: when the family converges on the couch, Bart is popped off and lands flat on his back in front of the TV. It was hilarious, and The Simpsons has continued to push the envelope with its episode introduction throughout its nearly 25-year—and counting—lifetime. Some of the most awe-inspiring intros have sprung from the minds of guest directors and animators, temporarily altering the entire character and style of Springfield, U.S.A." Creative Sculptures: Art Out of Ordinary Objects
Art is never easy, whether on a canvas or another medium. However, making sculptures and art on delicate objects (such as egg shells and pencils) is even more difficult and challenging. Doing this requires skill, patience, willing to accept that one can make mistakes and a love for art. When one has the passion for something then nothing is big, small or challenging, and they love every bit of it.
"Paintings normally require canvas and most theater takes a stage, but carvings can come out of almost any material – a fact which some talented artists have put to into practice in amazing ways. Most people are familiar with amazingly carved ice statues and perhaps even giant cheese sculptures, but what about eggs, pencils or books?"
Art is one of the few things that is not restricted to a certain criteria. One can explore and experiment it and always continue to mix and match to create new things. Art can transform ordinary objects into a piece that shows creativity and emotions that we are incapable of expressing. Through art (not just restricted to drawing and painting but also other arts such as drama and music) people are able to communicate and express their feelings that they are not able to express in words. Art is not like English or Science or Math, where they are restricted and have rules that one must follow. There are no rules in art, there is no right or wrong in art. Meaning, when we see new designs, new techniques and new methods to create art we find it very unique and it appeals to us.

The Butterfly Circus (Short Film)
If someone does not look a certain way, then they are treated differently, and often worse than normal. If someone has a mark on their face, their skin is a different color then they are not "normal". How is normal defined? What is normal? Is normal being able to speak? Or having light skin? What about having limbs? Or not having facial hair? Looking a certain way or acting a certain way does not define anyone. Their actions should speak louder than their words. Being beautiful or normal does not prove anything. Being different and standing out among a crowd makes you extraordinary. Being extraordinary should be awarded and not mistreated.
In some countries like Canada and the U.S. they have facilities for people that are disabled (not always but they do now). However, some countries still do have these facilities available. Instead, of trying to help these people out and showcasing their talents, they are poked fun at, laughed at and mistreated. Some people believe that these people are like this, because they have done something in their last birth (reincarnation) and to punish them God made them like this. Not everyone is perfect, everyone has faults in them, but I believe that we are made with these faults for a reason. It is not always necessary that a defect is always bad, instead it could propel a person forward and make them better. I heard this saying, that explains exactly this, Just like light is not always good, darkness is always not bad.
"At the height of the Great Depression, the showman of a renowned circus discovers a man without limbs being exploited at a carnival sideshow, but after an intriguing encounter with the showman he becomes driven to hope against everything he has ever believed."

Cameron Russell 'Looks Aren't Everything'
In today's world, looks are everything. The media has a great influence on the minds of young girls and boys because they make them believe that looking pretty/handsome is very important. However, media is not the only ones to blame, the make-up and beauty industry is also to blame. The use of make-up, lights, and digital editing is largely used to make the models look skinny, or make their more shiny, make their cheekbones sharper, tighten their waist and enlarge their hips so they look like the perfect girl or ideal girl. Magazines take pictures of models that portray them in a way that makes young girls look at themselves and hate the way their body looks. Not only this but young boys start to objectify girls because that is what they are bring shown and that is what they believe. Magazines objectify women and in the real world that is how they are treated and respected. Women have never been called an equal because women have always been oppressed by men. For years the way women have dressed, their professions, their attitude has been decided by society and considered the norm. Women are believed to be emotional and incapable of making the right decisions and this is why they were never given a chance to lead. Not much as changed, women are still considered the minority; it is 2014 and we have smart phones but still the respect for women is the same as it was 40 years ago. I know that women have been given the right to vote and a lot has changed and women have received many rights, however, the portrayal of women is still the same, they still considered objects for pleasure and machines that make babies.
Disney, is no better than the front cover of a magazine. For example, Tinker Bell, the short dress, the large hips, thin waist and thick thighs all portray the same message to little girls. Girls are not the only ones targeted, little boys have superheros that are all big and have large muscles, and are handsome. All of those Disney characters are children's idols and they grow up believing them and wanting to be like them.
For a very long time, women have been treated below men, because they are not physically as strong as men. No one cared to look at their intelligence, kindness or their capability because they were not allowed to express themselves or pursue their dreams instead they were told this is a man’s work not a woman’s. Freedom is not gained it is a right that every human being deserves. Women were the most constricted to freedom because they had the most rules to follow. A man and a woman are equally important and both of them are required. Just because there is a woman present that does not mean it is more of a house than when a woman is absent. Most people believe that only a woman can complete a house. This is only because women cook, clean, and take care of the children. In reality, both men and women are equally important in a house, because both work together to make a house complete, and both deserve to make decisions about their lives, one should not decide for the other. Men have been placed on a high pedestal while women have been placed no where near it. Women’s desires, dreams, interests have been crushed by society because people were unwilling to accept that women might be better than men. It is time for women to get the respect, freedom and equality they deserve. Women deserve their rightful place in society and deserve to do whatever they please without society interfering in their personal lives.
But, the question is, is society ready for a change? Or will women always be the oppressed minority?
“A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human.”

The Fun Theory
"The thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behavior for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better."
Many people have tried to change the way people think, in various ways. Nothing really makes a difference; for example, telling people to conserve water, and they might for that one day but the next day they will once again go back to wasting water. The fun theory really works! It changes the way people think, and act. It changes something ordinary into something that is fun for both the viewer and the participant to enjoy. This causes people to make a change without them realizing it.
I watched a lot of the videos on the fun theory, however the one that really stood out was the Beggar Robot. Many beggars are banned from entering or begging in certain areas (such as malls) and so because of this they are unable to collect cash from passerby's. This robot begs for them and they collect the cash at the end of the day. The homeless could rent the robot for a day. While watching the video, there was a certain part of the video that really made me upset. In Taiwan, the robot begger was placed on a busy street and beside the robot beggar was a real human beggar. This gave people the option of choosing which beggar to give money to. Most people ignored the human beggar and game money to the robot beggar. Then, after some time, an authority figure noticed the human beggar and asked him to leave the premises. After making sure that he left, he noticed the robot, he walked over, took a picture, donated some money and then left. He choose to give money to a machine rather than a human like himself. Why did people feel caring toward the robot rather a living, breathing, suffering human? I mean, for this cause the money was going to the beggars either way, but it showed who people really valued and were most likely to give attention to.
"The Beggar Robot has access to areas normally off-limits to beggars, where the richer members of society more often frequent. The hypothesis is that this part of society is only able to show some sympathy towards the marginalized if they communicate from a safe distance and via a technological interface. The project tests and exploits the advantages of robotic interface by bringing the Beggar Robot to public spaces in different countries. Submitted by Sedlacek Sas"
I really liked The Fun Theory, because it is possible to create change with fun. I love the idea of helping someone out by not forcing people to donate, but creating something that makes them enjoy donating willingly.
